Trauma Sensitive Classrooms Projects
In 2019, 7-Dippity partnered with Dr. Elizabeth Connors, Associate Professor of Psychiatry, and her amazing team at the Yale School of Medicine to develop the Trauma Sensitive Classrooms (TSC) Project.
TSC was created for school districts requesting practical, evidence-based, trauma-informed strategies to promote student resilience and reduce barriers to learning. TSC also seeks to positively support the mental health and well-being of teachers and administrators as well. TSC includes proactive (Tier 1) and responsive (Tier 2) strategies, customized to the specific needs and strengths of a school or district. The model utilizes a “kernels” approach, whereby a few specific strategies are selected and utilized, lessening the need for educators to learn an entire curriculum.
Implementation is supported through professional development and consultation led by the Yale/7-Dippity team. In addition, local “champions” are trained at school and district levels to provide additional personalized, hands-on support for teachers as they learn and implement the strategies in their classrooms. Champions are not in an evaluative role, but rather provide non-judgemental and encouraging support, brainstorming and problem-solving alongside educators.
