HELPING CHILDREN AND FAMILIES COPE WITH THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

The COVID-19 pandemic has been a difficult and stressful time for children and families around the world. The pandemic has brought about a set of worries and challenges that many people have not faced before. For some, it is has exacerbated already existing challenges. These new and added stressors can take a psychological toll on adults and children.

To help children and families cope with the mental health effects of the pandemic, Dr. Annette La Greca, Distinguished Professor of Psychology and Pediatrics at the University of Miami, and 7-Dippity, Inc., a consulting company specializing in capacity building and education, teamed up to create Helping Children and Families Cope with the COVID-19 Pandemic.

The information and activities contained in this unique interactive guide are based on research conducted with children following previous disasters. The resilience-enhancing strategies are designed for an adult to work on together with a child 6-12 years of age. However, some of the information and activities can be adapted for use with younger or older children. In addition, some of the activities can also be used with more than one child at a time.

Dr. La Greca and 7-Dippity have previously worked together to provide substantial support to communities affected by previous disasters, including the 9/11 terrorist attacks, Hurricanes Katrina, Maria, and Michael and earthquakes in Haiti and Japan. They have also provided extensive support for active duty military members, veterans, first responders and their families.
